Our LOCAL Great War Project

Welcome to the Blore Rural District History Society Great War Project

covering Ashley, Broughton, Croxton, Hales, Loggerheads, Mucklestone and Tyrley Staffordshire, UK

The objective of Our Great War Project is to commemorate the centenary of the Great War (1914-1918 (1919)) by recording as much information about the personal, family and military history of the names on the War Memorials in the above Churchs/Churchyards and memorial plaques at the Hugo Meynell C of E (VC) Primary School) and Tyrley Locks including any known circumstances of their death and their resting place or commemoration.

We wish to thank the Commonwealth War Graves Commission for their
permission to reproduce many of the photographs that appear on the site.

Blore Rural District History Society has instigated a project with the objective of creating a more detailed and lasting epitaph for our and future generations.

The aim is to research all the names listed for:

Current research has not ascertained the exact criteria of the eligibility for names to have been included.

The research involved is quite challenging and is not restricted to any one person or group. Any member or group of the community of whatever age is not only invited, but greatly encouraged to participate to make the project a success.

If you are interested in participating or you have any information, photographs, stories, etc. which you would allow us to copy then you are recommended to contact one of the co-ordinators so that duplication of effort is avoided.

It is one hundred years since our lads left their homes to fight in the Great War of 1914-18, ordinary lads from our communities leaving their loved ones to take part in the bloodiest war in history. Sailing in mine infested waters, flying aeroplanes made of fabric and wood, trenches knee deep in stagnant water, they fought and died. Wounds and suffering far beyond our understanding were a daily occurrence. Yet despite all, our lads did not fail us. They gave their lives to free us from oppression and allow us free speech. Far too often those infamous words ‘Killed in action’ rattled off countless telegraphs. These lads often left sweethearts, mothers, fathers, brothers, sisters and children grieving. Yet we the community of 2014 know little of their lives and the circumstances of their loss. Faceless names inscribed on endless village memorials. We owe it to these lads to record these stories for future generations.

This is the greatest project ever attempted by our small communities, an opportunity to bond the communities in one objective ‘to remember them’. No matter what age you are, or ability you are all very welcome to join us to make history.

They shall grow not old, as we that are left grow old

Age shall not weary them, nor the years condemn
At the going down of the sun and in the morning
We will remember them.
